Dr. Helen Fisher of Rutgers University, Department of Anthropology, led research in the brain’s reaction to romance. Let me tell you the most important finding first. The researchers found that men’s brains linked to sexual arousal, while women’s brains linked to emotions. The report was published in 2003 by the Society for Neuroscience, www.sfn.org. Other related studies of Dr. Fisher are available on her website www.helenfisher.com.
The Ladder Theory, www.laddertheory.com. The Ladder Theory is largely unscientific and unsupported by empirical research. Yet, many of us experienced in sexual relations will tend to agree when the Ladder Theory is used to explain male and female sexual behavior.
The VALS™ consumer research developed a classification system for consumers according to personality types. Based on the 1984 book The nine American lifestyles: Who we are and where we’re going by Arnold Mitchell, it identifies psychological motivations to predict consumer behavior. Advertisers use these personality classifications in creating their sales messages. See the VALS™ personality types for Innovators and Survivors. Source: SRI Consulting Business Intelligence, see www.strategicbusinessinsights.com. By the way, they have a brief test on their website to identify your personality type in the VALS™ system. See the VALS™ Survey

Here is my 10-minute program to get you inspired. You log onto www.youtube.com, and watch … WAIT A MINUTE: You will watch ONLY these videos, and nothing else. Don’t you DARE watch the stupid stuff that YouTube will start suggesting to you to draw you into claptrap. Now let’s get it started:
- Singer Susan Boyle taking the stage in Britain’s Got Talent (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPZh4AnWyk)
- Nick Vujicic explaining that when you fall, you always get back up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4uG2kSdd-4); and here is another good one:
- Whitney Houston singing the American national anthem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1QmeEdFOSc).
The Face Research Lab at the School of Psychology of the University of Aberdeen (www.facelab.org) has some amazing insights in this regard. The journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B (biological sciences) (rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org) is another valuable source of research in this regard.
Oh, you think your fingers are not nimble enough or somehow your body just won’t let you do it? I have seen several musicians who overcame what other people consider handicaps. Guitarist and singer Jason "Lefty" Williams plays guitar even though he is missing his lower right arm. He created a strap with a metal ring attached to pick the guitar strings. See www.lefty-music.com. The Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, blind since birth, won the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas in 2009. You can see him on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9MlN-ZudKo.

Here is another suggestion, and once again, this is just one of a million offerings you will find once you start searching: School of the World, www.schooloftheworld.org. This is a small school in Jaco, Costa Rica, and yes, there is a beach. They offer Spanish language courses, and also (here it comes) surfing, yoga, and photography instruction.
Finally, at some point you must sail around the world. To find out more, see www.clipper-ventures.com (you will find the link to request an application package here) and www.robinknox-johnston.co.uk.
Here is a shortcut to the “must do” vacations. The Swiss New7Wonders Foundation (www.new7wonders.com) conducted a review and received more than 100 million votes for the New Seven Wonders of the World. |
